What free advertising actually exists for startups?
Genuinely free startup advertising in 2026, separated from free trials and freemium traps: directories, launches, communities, earned media and free slots.
"Free advertising" searches return two kinds of results: things that are actually free, and things with a free trial attached to a sales call. This list is only the first kind — channels where the price is genuinely zero and stays zero — with an honest note on what each one returns. (Disclosure: published by BidSurvivor, which is on the list because its entry tier really is $0.)
Free and permanent
Directories. Startup, niche and AI directories cost time only. Individually they send a trickle; collectively they make your brand name findable and build the backlinks that help everything else rank. One evening, once, per batch.
Your Google Business Profile / Bing Places — if anything about your startup is local or has a service area. Routinely skipped by software founders, ranks instantly for brand searches.
Open directories of your craft. GitHub for anything with code, marketplace listings for anything with an integration (Slack, Shopify, Chrome stores). These are advertising surfaces wearing infrastructure clothes.
Free with a performance ceiling set by effort
Launch platforms. Product Hunt, Uneed, Fazier — free, and the result tracks preparation. A prepared launch is worth hundreds of dollars of equivalent traffic; an unprepared one, nearly nothing.
Communities. Reddit, Discords, forums. The only free channel that produces users who stay, and the only one that punishes laziness with removal. Answer problems; the mention rides along.
Earned media. A launch post someone else writes about you, a podcast guest spot, a quote in a roundup. Free in money, expensive in outreach time, compounds forever.
Free advertising in the literal sense
A free ad slot — ours. BidSurvivor is an advertising board where the first brand into an empty slot pays $0 — no account, no card — and holds twelve hours of the page. Every account also starts with $100 of house credit, so even the auction part (outbids from $1.00) costs nothing out of pocket at current prices. Your slot's opens and click-throughs are published whether they flatter anyone or not. It is, as far as we know, the only literal display advertising a startup can run for zero dollars; the trade is a young board's honest traffic numbers.
What free can't do
Scale on demand, target precisely, or guarantee timing. Free channels find out whether strangers want the thing — the full ordered playbook is in marketing a side project with no budget — and the moment one converts repeatably is the moment paid amplification starts making sense (the budget math).
