Second-price auction

In a second-price auction the highest bidder wins but pays just above the second-highest bid.

It encourages bidding your true value, since overbidding does not raise the price you pay. Search advertising still uses a variant of it, adjusted by ad quality.

Its weakness in programmatic display was opacity: buyers could not see the second price, and some intermediaries were found adjusting it.
